| Friday, March 22, 2024 | | Time | Description | | 8:00 - 8:30 a.m. | Registration & Continental Breakfast | | 8:30 a.m. | Don’t Turn a Blind Eye to AI You can’t browse the headlines today without bumping into a mention of AI – artificial intelligence. Half the news explains why AI threatens humanity, while the other half argues that it is humankind’s salvation. But we’re just trying to understand how it affects our day-to-day practice – are we out of a job or missing out on the next best tool? It would be easy to shove it all into a corner and hope it blows over, but it’s not going anywhere. In fact, we’ve been interacting with artificial intelligence for decades but recent developments in the technology have taken the spotlight (ChatGPT). In this session, we’ll break down the overwhelming topic of AI into digital bite-size chunks to help you gain a comfort level with the practical realities of AI and how you can incorporate AI-based tools into your practice – no robots required. | | 9:30 a.m. | How Microsoft Copilot Can Assist Your Legal Practice and Why It Will Become Invaluable for Your Daily Tasks What if you could have a personal assistant summarize all your messages from your overflowing Inbox? What if that assistant could see upcoming meetings and collect the notes you need? These promises (and more) are the goals of Microsoft Copilot coming soon to a computer near you. Microsoft is already integrating some of these tools directly into Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and more so that they’re ready for you to use as soon as possible. In this session, we’ll explore the promises of Copilot and any potential downsides you should be aware of. But suffice it to say that the future is already on its way. | | 10:30 - 10:45 a.m. | Break | | 10:45 a.m. | Cyber-Security That’s Not Cyber-Scary – The Basics of Securing Your Law Practice In cybersecurity, the question is not if, but when. Are you prepared? Cybersecurity starts with awareness, risk assessment, and a plan of action when something happens. We’ll talk about solid (and easy) steps you can take to put your firm in a better security position that doesn’t require a degree from MIT or the bankroll of Tesla. | | 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. | Lunch - Boxed Lunch Provided | | 1:00 p.m. | Mobile Ethics – How to Ensure Your Mobile Practice is Secure and Protected The dream (or doom) is now a reality - lawyers can work from anywhere today with the prevalence of all sorts of mobile devices. As long as you have a laptop, smartphone, tablet, or wearable gadget you can get work done. Clients expect you to be accessible when they need you and that you can accomplish your work regardless of whether you’re at the office, at home, or sitting on the beach. But how can you be sure everything is safe? Under the rules of professional conduct, you have a duty to protect their information and be technologically competent but none of us have time to become a cyber-security expert. This session will help you understand the risks associated with the mobile devices you use every day, and how to protect the confidential information you carry on them.
| | 2:00 p.m. | The Communication Mediums that Matter Today – Collecting evidence from text message to social media Email used to be the primary electronic communication that we cared about for litigation matters. But today, email is sometimes the last option someone selects, and instead, they turn to text messages, collaboration platforms (e.g. Slack, Teams, etc.), and social media. But how can you effectively collect and preserve communications from these platforms? In this session, we’ll provide a broad overview of the different methods that you need to be aware of to better instruct your client and opposing counsel. | | 3:00 - 3:15 p.m. | Break
| | 3:15 p.m. | The Best Tips & Tricks in Microsoft Word that You’re Not Even Using If there’s one tool that every lawyer uses, it’s Microsoft Word – you draft motions, author letters, edit court filings, and much more. But are you fully using all the tools and features inside Word that can help you save time and avoid frustration? This session is geared to provide you with the most helpful and practical tips in using Microsoft Word so that you can easily add headers & footers, apply page numbers, create a table of contents, copy text without the formatting, use templates, and so much more. Come learn how you can effectively utilize Microsoft Word to effortlessly draft your documents and increase your productivity! | | 4:15 p.m. | Tips & Tricks, Gadgets & Gizmos, Websites and Widgets A smorgasbord of helpful tips, gadgets, and websites that you can start using in your practice today! | | 4:45 p.m. | Adjourn |
